Chairman - Vacant
Broadstone Residents Association currently has a vacancy for the Chairman
Vice-Chairman - Pat Talbot
I am the Vice Chairman of the Association and also their Planning Officer looking after the interests of all residents throughout BH18.
I live in a house at 63 Lower Blandford Road built for my grandparents in 1939 and this has been my home since 1987 when returning to Dorset after some 28 years in Somerset.
I scan the Planning Committee Application List each week and if any residents have any queries or doubts I take them up and respond on behalf of the Association.
I have always been concerned in all things affecting our village, particularly any development that does not respect the character and appearance of the area.
I attend Council meetings where any disputed applications are listed for determination by the Planning Committee and I address the Committee whenever appropriate.
I am always pleased to hear from any resident regarding Planning matters and my home telephone number is 01202 463715, or by email pa.talbot@ntlworld.com.
Treasurer - Roger Jefferies
I am a retired Chartered Accountant having retired in 2000 from my position as Finance Director & Company Secretary of Hall & Woodhouse Ltd, the Brewers and soft drink manufacturers in Blandford.
I have lived in Laurel Drive, Broadstone since 1983 and am married to Anne and have four grown-up boys.
Magazine Editor - Roy Godfrey
I worked for Unilever, a major international company for 32 years. Initially in Industrial Engineering, working of Critical Path Analysis, Ergonomics and factory design research and development. It was a very exciting time because industry was changing rapidly from electro-mechanical to electronic. I later moved into factory management and ended my career as Health and Safety Manager for six factories in the south of England and Wales. Unilever moved us to Poole in 1973 and we bought a house on Sandbanks Road; we moved to Broadstone in 2005. I have become involved with Broadstone Residents' Association and Broadstone Neighbourhood Watch. I belong to no political party. I stood as an Independent candidate in the recent local elections. I have campaigned for improvements to the State Pension and have created a petition on the Prime Minister's web-site which has raised nearly 7,000 signatures.
Ruth and I have two sons living in Poole at Lilliput and a daughter in Bristol. Our grandchildren give us great pleasure.
We very much enjoy living in Broadstone, which against all odds has retained a unique village atmosphere.
Our interests include gardening, photography, going to the theatre and taking holidays. I particularly enjoy French polishing and restoring antique furniture; one of us enjoys shopping.
Publicity - Ro Mitchell
I have been living in Broadstone for over 11 years, after living in various other parts of the country and have served on the Committee as Publicity Officer for the last 3 of them. I am responsible for maintaining the two notice boards outside the Post Office and Budgens, publicising our meetings with residents and any Borough of Poole meetings to do with Broadstone, to which the public are welcome.
Please don't hesitate to contact me, via the "publicity" email address (see "NOTE" above), if you are involved with a local club or society and would like some free publicity on the website or our notice boards.
We also use our notice boards and website to keep residents informed of any important issues affecting Broadstone that may crop up between our magazine and newsletter publications, so please make a point of checking them regularly.
Primarily though, I am currently studying with the Open University to gain a BSc. Honors degree.
Webmaster - David Anderson
I retired at the end of 2008 from Siemens Traffic Controls on Sopers Lane. The reason I came to Broadstone is all due to the previous Residents' Association Chairman and current Vice-President John Noyes! He interviewed me for a post with Plessey (pre-Siemens) in 1978, which I took up. Subsequently I relocated to São Paulo, Brazil, in 1980 for a post with Plessey do Brasil, working on the same project as Plessey, Poole. I lived in Brazil for a total of 16 years.
Apart from webmaster of this site, I also run Broadstone Net, Dorset BCS, Welcome to Poole, Baden Powell Centenary Statue and a few more. I am also Secretary of Poole Heart Support Group, and am involved in campaigning for cycling as Poole coordinator for Dorset Cylists' Network and ranger for Sustrans (Sustainable Transport).
You can follow my updates on Twitter - Broadstone Residents and Poole Cycling.
Archivist / Secretary - Jill Floyd
I grew up in Blandford and left Blandford Grammar School just after moving to Wimborne. I have lived in Broadstone for over 10 years.
My working background was in the book trade in Wimborne, and administration after learning to use a computer at Bournemouth College. I have a keen interest in gardening, enjoying both the work and the wildlife I encounter. My other love is family history which although time consuming is a fascinating hobby. I have traced my roots back to my great great great great grandfather who I have discovered is buried in Wimborne Minster churchyard, so my roots are quite local.
Married to Edward with two children we made a conscious decision to try to be part of the Broadstone community after developers tried to buy our land. Deciding to stay and not sell out made us realise how much we wanted Broadstone to stay as it was and that we should make an effort ourselves to preserve its character if we could. We were already members of the Residents Association but decided to take a more active part by becoming street wardens. I was asked to be archivist and now Edward and I are to jointly take on the job as Secretary for the association.
News / Secretary - Edward Floyd
I was born and grew up in Plymouth, leaving Devonport High School to join my parents who had recently moved to Bath. I started work, with Lloyds Bank, and my most time-consuming 'pastime', with the Somerset Light Infantry [Territorial Army] in October 1962. I then joined Barclays Bank DCO in 1966 and was posted to Zambia. I worked there from August 1966 to August 1967 when I broke my back in a car accident. I have been in a wheelchair ever since but returned to work with Barclays, Bath less than a year after my accident. I was transferred to Barclays International in Frizzell House Poole in 1971 and was in the second batch of workers[?] to move into Barclays House in 1975 . I took early retirement in 1988 and joined Wimborne CAB as a volunteer adviser. I retired after 13 years work and now deal with the publicity for St. John the Baptist as well as updating their website which David Anderson kindly provided for the church some four years ago. As Jill has written so eloquently, we are now also involved with the BRA. Having lived in the same house since 1971 and seen the damage wrought elsewhere in the village, I am eager to help put up a strong resistance to 'unsuitable' change.
My main hobbies are reading and, since acquiring a powered chair, doing the shopping. My good fortune is to be married to a wife who loathes shopping!
Environment - Keith Clements
I grew up and attended various schools in London; the last being the first comprehensive school to be built called Woodberry Down, which bordered the Stoke Newington reservoir close to Finsbury Park. I left school in 1957 to do an apprenticeship in engineering, I left after a couple of years, working on a lathe all day wasn't for me, so I decided to try my hand at something else. A vacancy came up for a slater's mate, I had an interview got the job and found myself working on the roofs of houses in the east end replacing slates and tiles that had come adrift, this I did until I married in 1966. By this time I had had enough of climbing ladders and needed a change and went into horticulture where I worked in various London parks. In 1971 we moved to Buckinghamshire where I was employed by the Milton Keynes Development Corporation planting hundreds of trees for the new city. While living there I spent two years day release at Aylesbury College of Agriculture and Horticulture, then in 1975 I decided I had seen and planted enough trees to last me a lifetime so we up sticks and moved to Broadstone where I was employed as a groundsman gardener for the Borough of Poole working in the recreation ground and Poole Park. In the late seventies I attended Kingston Maurward College to do further studies in horticulture.
It was in 1980 when my wife and I decided to start a cub pack, which was known as St. John's but later due to limited time of our meetings a decision was made to move from St. John's hall to the War Memorial Hall. During my time in scouting I managed to do a sponsored cycle ride from John O Groats to Lands End, something I've always wanted to do. Two former scouts, Paul Connor and Robert Kentish, accompanied me, we had backup from Peter Jameson and Eric Whapples who carried the food and tents, and we had a great time. The cubs also raised money for Peter Scott's Wildfowl Trust at Slimbridge where they met Sir Peter and presented him with the cheque. During our time with the cubs we managed to get ourselves on Southern TV appearing in "Out Of Town" on 28th August 1983 with the late Jack Hargreaves. The lucky ones chosen were taught the art of angling, oh what wonderful memories. In 1989-90 we decided to have a rest from scouting and handed the pack over to Anne Biggs.
When Poole Borough Council went private I commenced working for Continental Landscapes until I retired in 2007. Since my retirement I have become a volunteer warden for the HCT (the Herpetological Conservation Trust) on Dunyeats Hill, so if you happen to see someone creeping around the park or heath with a camera or a net that's me checking on the Reptiles and looking for new species of insects.
Broadstone Access Group - Lynne Fisher
You may have seen me dashing around Broadstone in my wheelchair, using my yellow ball for my chin control.
I have lived in Broadstone for over 21 years, and before that, Merley, so you could say I know the area fairly well. I am married, with 2 lovely daughters, the eldest went through the Broadstone pyramid of schools and my youngest finished her 6th form years at Parkstone Grammar. My husband and I have always been involved in the local educational system.
I love Broadstone and although it is part of the Poole conurbation, it still retains it's village atmosphere, where people pull together to maintain it's friendliness.
Some years ago I was a local teacher, and my husband and I also later ran our own business.
Since 2005 I have been the chairperson of the Broadstone Access Group and am very passionate about improving the lives of people with disabilities, especially in the Broadstone area.
I am a director of Pro Disability which provides services for people with disabilities and an advisor for various organisations on disability issues.
My most recent 'project' as chairperson of Broadstone Access Group has been to represent the blue badge holders in the petition against the 'Loading Restrictions' in Broadstone (Amendment 40)'.
We worked alongside the 'Broadstone Chamber of Commerce' and Councillor Mike Brooke in overturning the council's proposal. We formulated a new proposal which was unanimously accepted by Poole Borough Council.
I care about Broadstone's environment as well as disability issues and I hope I will be of help to the Broadstone Residents Association.
